David O’Dwyer, PI


Dr. O’Dwyer is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan. He graduated from University College Cork Medical School, National University of Ireland in 2004. Dr. O’Dwyer completed his internal medicine residency training through the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and was awarded membership of the Royal College of Physicians (RCPI) in 2007. He completed a clinical fellowship in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine at St. Vincents University Hospital and the Royal College of Physicians in 2014. He completed research training in pulmonary medicine graduating with a PhD in pulmonary fibrosis from University College Dublin, National University of Ireland in 2014. He completed clinical fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Michigan in 2017. Dr O’Dwyer is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Internal Medicine, and the Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology at Michigan.

Jay Lipinski, Lab manager

Jay Lipinski joined in 2019 and serves as the laboratory manager and lead technician. He is an Ann Arbor native who holds a BS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Michigan. Jay is responsible for daily lab operations, preclinical modeling, sample processing, and coordinating with clinical collaborators. When he’s not in the lab, Jay can be found on a golf course or in the kitchen.

Piyush Ranjan, Bioinformaticist

Piyush joined in 2022 as the lab bioinformatician. He holds MS in Bioinformatics and Biology from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. He joined the University of Michigan in 2018 as the bioinformaticist in the Dickson Lab within the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and currently serves as the lead bioinformaticist for both the Dickson and O’Dwyer labs. Piyush performs multi-omic analyses for projects involving amplicon sequencing, short- and long-read metagenomics, and bulk and single-cell RNA-seq. He supports trainees and collaborators, and manages large biological datasets and computational resources for both labs. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his child and playing space exploration, strategy, and role-playing computer games.

Sheridan Mikhail, PhD Student

Sheridan graduated from Baylor University with a B.S in both Biology and Economics. She is currently a fourth year PhD candidate in the Immunology Program. Her thesis project focuses on how ambient air temperature affects the immune system. She is investigating how thermoneutrality impacts pre-clinical models of pulmonary fibrosis. She loves to garden, cook and explore new restaurants.
